Sewing Products You Will Need!
What do I need?
There will be many items you will
need to begin your sewing adventure!
Contact me to find out what
you will need for your first class.
You can add to your tools as you need them. You don’t need them all - YET!
Remember, you need a good place to sew. You can always sew on your table,
or you can set up a small spot so it’s ready when you want to sew.
It’s best if you have a dedicated space just for your sewing machine.

Brother XR9550 Sewing Machine
One my my favorite features on some Brother Machines is the variable speed control! You can slow it down1. Great for beginners! (especially children and adults as well!)
Brother HC1850 Sewing Machine
Very similar to the XR9550. Another one with a wonderful variable speed. Has a few bells and whistles too!
Brother CS7000x Sewing Machine
This is a great Brother Sewing machine as well as the other two before. It also has variable speed.
Any of these would be great for any student!
Brother GX37 Sewing Machine
This is a GREAT basic machine. It is manual and not electronic other than plugging it in and hitting the pedal. Older kids can learn to control the foot pedal, and it has all the stitches you need. Really for sewing you only need a few choices for stitches
More details on the product page.
Dial select stitch machines
I do not recommend these types of machines. They will work just fine if you have one, but unfortunately, these only allow the preset stitches that are on the dial. Some allow for slight variations between stitches, but overall, not my favorite. Also, because they are cheaper machines, one of my students had trouble with this one just after a few uses. To fix or maintain, well, it costs more than the machine.
Kids Sewing Machines
NO!!! Don’t do it!
Actually, I purchased two different ones for my daughter when she was younger. One broke Christmas day and the replacement broke a few days after the exchange.
It is more difficult to thread than a regular machine!
Cheap … please…...just don’t!
Children need real machines to sew on even if they are just starting out.
SEWING TOOLS
Sewing Pen
Water Soluble & Disappearing
Another must for sewing is sewing pens, pencils and chalk. This is one of my favorites!
Sewing Pen
Water Soluble
I love the water soluble! Just spray water on the fabric or wash! It comes right out!
Heat Erasable Pens for Fabric
These are wonderful - disappear with heat from iron

Tailor’s Chalk
I love my chalk as much as my sewing pens. Sometimes when your pen runs out, you have your amazing chalk! Also, you need white and the blue for different fabric
Sewing Pins
I have found in teaching children that the longer the pins the easier it is to pin the fabric (more to work with). These are almost as long as quilting pins.
We love pretty colors don’t we!?
Do not get the tiny little metal pins..
terrible to work with.
Sewing Clips
Sewing clips are wonderful to work with. I like them, and use them, but I’m still old school and like my pins too!
Fiskars Scissors
(left handed)
Same great pair as the ones below but for my left handed friends!

Fiskars Scissors
(right handed)
I love a GREAT pair of scissors. Affordable and they work wonderful! You need a pair or paper cutting scissors too and a little pair of snips for cutting thread of inside small places when you applique.

Fiskars little scissor snips
Sometimes you need a little pair of pointy sharp scissors for applique or for just snipping off the threads of your project. These are perfect for both.

Fiskars Rotary cutter
Not for beginners or children.
I use these when I cut fabric while using a Self Healing Mat and acrylic ruler. Some love them, some hate them. For me, it depends on what I am cutting out!

Brother Bobbins
Class 15 Plastic Brother Bobbins.
Most brother machines and some Singer machines use these. Make sure you get the right kind that goes with your machine. These are flat on top and bottom, not curved. Look at the sample that came with your machine to make sure!

Sewing machine needles
If you have sewn for any time at all, you know you need more sewing machine needles. These are UNIVERSAL needles that range in a variety of sizes and perfect for most anything you are sewing.

Jeans (Heavy Duty)
Sewing machine needles
Occasionally you will need some heavy duty needles for thick fabrics. If you try with a regular needles, you’ll probably be replacing it anyway because it will break on you. You can use this on your heavy projects then put your universal regular needle back in after your heavy project. Don’t forget or it will make LARGE needles holes in your thin cotton fabrics.

Sewing Basket
Everyone needs a sewing basket. This one is great for all your tools and a few supplies!!
PLEASE DO NOT get the kind with tools already in them. The tools are low quality and you will need to replace soon. Pins are tiny and hard to work with and the scissors are, well like paper scissors.
Purchase good tools!
